The Truth About Levels in Music and Video Production: What You Pay For Is What You Get
When it comes to music and video production, there are levels to this game. If you get it, you get it,,,, what you pay for is what you get. But let’s break down what that really means because a lot of artists don’t see the full picture. This is just my opinion, but I see these patterns play out every day.
The Difference Between Investing and Spending
Whether it’s music or video, production is a deep process with layers on layers. And don’t get it twisted,,,, just because something costs more doesn’t always mean it’s the best fit. Sometimes, a budget route gives you the vibe you’re after. Knowing the difference is everything.
And it’s not always about paying with money! sometimes, it’s about paying with the skills and time you’ve invested. That’s where the real value comes from,,,, putting in the hours, learning your craft, and paying your dues. This investment in yourself can be worth even more than money, building a foundation for quality work down the road.
A lot of artists get stuck here. They have a vision but don’t realise the investment it takes to bring it to life. From writing or buying lyrics, recording, producing, mixing, mastering, planning the shoot, filming, editing,,,, it’s a big commitment. If you’re not ready to take that on, why chase it? This is where artists go wrong, especially the ones I call “fame-chasers” those who want the spotlight but don’t understand the grind. It’s one thing to spit a few bars with autotune or film a quick reel. But creating quality work that lasts? That’s a whole other story.
Talent Alone Isn’t Enough
Here’s the truth: there are people out there who can give you a big boost, but you’ve got to show you’re serious. You have to be the talent and prove you’re committed. Don’t sit around waiting for someone to hand you a silver spoon, thinking you’re the best artist in the world. From my perspective, I hear it every day,,,, “I’m the best; no one does it like me.” To be honest, it’s childish. Local artists end up in competition with each other and, as a result, stay local. If that’s all you want, fine. But if you’re aiming higher, you need a different mindset.
And here’s where a lot of artists go overboard 🙈 they try to drop their first video like it’s a Hollywood production, hoping it’ll win an Oscar. It’s crazy out here,,,, schools don’t teach this, but you’d think common sense would kick in. You don’t need a massive budget right out the gate, and trying to impress with high-budget visuals won’t fix the basics if they’re missing. It’s about starting small, working up, and respecting each step in the journey.
Creating Without Expectations
Look, if you don’t love this art from the heart, whether it’s music or video, it’s going to feel like a bad drug,,,, something you’re always chasing, and never finding satisfaction. If it’s not truly about the passion, you’ll get lost. Create for you, whether or not it gets out there. If it makes you happy, that’s what matters. This is just my opinion, but if you’re not creating for yourself first, then you’re in it for the wrong reasons.
Autotune Isn’t a Substitute for Skill (And Filters Aren’t a Substitute for Good Video)
For the singers out there: learn how to sing. Autotune is cool, but it’s not a replacement for skill unless that is your sound. Basics are key. The same goes for video. Filters and effects can only take you so far. If your footage isn’t solid (Performance), no amount of editing can cover that up. Vocal lessons and video fundamentals go a long way,,,, not just for technique, but also for communicating with producers, engineers, editors, and others in the industry. The right training will humble you, too, and that’s a good thing. Learning your craft is about growth and respect for the art.
So You’re Serious? Here’s How to Move in Music and Video
If you’re serious about this, you’ve got to make the right moves. Start with the basics and build from there. It’s all about taking it step by step.
The Steps to Leveling Up in Music and Video Production
1. Self-Education
Dive into the fundamentals. Whether it’s sound or visuals, understand what makes a track sound good or what makes a shot look professional. Study the basics of both music and video production. The more you know, the stronger your foundation will be.
2. Skill Development
Focus on your craft. If you’re a singer, master your voice. If you’re a rapper, work on your flow, delivery, and timing. If you’re working on video, learn framing, lighting, and composition. Whatever your skill set, refine it to stand out.
3. Production Basics
Even if you’re not an expert producer or videographer, get familiar with the basics. Understand beats, layering, mixing, and how to structure a video. This knowledge will help you communicate better with your team.
4. Networking and Collaboration
Connect with producers, engineers, editors, and other artists. Building these relationships early on is crucial for growth. Music and video are as much about the connections as they are about the sound and visuals.
5. Experiment and Test
Don’t expect perfection from the start. Experiment with your sound and visuals, test your mixes and edits, and don’t worry if your first few projects aren’t pro-level, especially if you’re funding everything yourself. Every step is progress.
6. Consistency and Growth
Stay consistent. Each project should be a step forward. Don’t settle. Keep pushing, and eventually, that professional level will come naturally.
The Bottom Line: Respect the Process
Every pro started somewhere. Keep at it, respect the process, and build your career from the ground up. You’ll only get what you put in, and the results will show if you’re putting in the work. In my opinion, it’s this respect for the process that separates the pros from the amateurs.
Whether it’s music or video, this journey takes commitment and heart. If you’re here for the long haul, make every move count and stay true to your vision. It’s not about fame or chasing trends; it’s about creating something real that resonates and stands the test of time.

Stay Blessed 🙏
